Sportube Double Haul Fly Rod Case

The Sportube Double Haul is the ultimate fly rod case to transport fly rods on the roof rack of your car, SUV, or truck.  The Double Haul completely protects, and locks, 2 fully assembled fly rods with reels.  Ideal for pulling up to those after work fishing spots or changing locations quickly.

Sportube fly rod cases are blow-molded from high density polyethylene, which, while being strong and durable, is very lightweight.  The 4 piece, fully-adjustable fly rod case mounts and locks to most roof racks to protect rods and reels from theft, damage, wind, and dirt.  The Double Haul can be disassembled and used in shorter lengths for airline travel or storage.

Friction hinge allows reel housing door to stay in “open” position for easy loading and unloading.

We recommend the Sportube Double Haul Case Support Bar for added stability and safety. If the distance between the roof rack bars is less than 48" the Double Haul may slightly bow. No damage will occur, but the Support Bar eliminates bowing and adds the proper support. The Support Bar is best for use on trucks with toppers with the roof rack bars mounted over the topper and the case support bar mounted over the cab (please see related items).

The foam to protect the reel housing can be customized for larger reels by cutting away the foam with a long blade from a utility knife.

The hinge on the door is a friction hinge, which means the door can be tightened or loosened by turning the center screw on the top of the hinge.

We suggest using some Locktite or Thread Locker on the carriage bolt, otherwise it can have a tendency to loosen over time with vibrations.

When removing yours rods and reels you may experience a slight catch or snag. This is the line guide catching on the inner lip of the male section of tube. While Sportube does chamfer this lip, it is impossible to eliminate it entirely. Don’t tug at the rod! Simply reduce the tension on the rod, lowering it slightly and continue to remove. Sometimes applying a little downward pressure on the rod handle helps keep the guides from catching. If using the case with two rods make sure that you don’t catch the line guides on the guides of the other rod by turning the 2nd rod toward the outside of the case.

When using the Double Haul with two rods, be aware of the 2nd rod. Ensure that the rod is in its half of the case. If not, it is possible that the tip of the rod you are inserting could poke through a line guide of the one already in there.

The suggested distance between the front roof rack bar and the rear bar is at least 54". While a lesser bar spread can work, it can cause the front of the Double Haul to go unsupported and it will have a tendency to bow.

We recommend the use of a Case Support Bar to help support the front of the case. The Support Bar is adjustable in height simply by cutting the “T” pillar to the required height. It securely attaches to all steel surfaces with a magnetic and/or Vacuum-on-demand base. The footprint is approximately 6" x 6”.

Nylon impregnated injection molded plastic mounting clamps make for a very strong, durable and weather resistant part and therefore can be left on the vehicle permanently, as can the case itself. We suggest that when using the mounts without the Double Haul in place, that you keep the latches closed and preferably locked. Vibrations and wind could open the latch, allowing the top clamp section to detach itself.
