Ski Tuning Equipment

Skiers and riders spend a ton of money on their equipment, but often neglect keeping it properly tuned.  With EdgeTune you will be able to regularly tune your gear with precision. The complete EdgeTune package, including the Dremel MultiPro rotary tool system, provides all the accessories (and then some) that you will need to sharpen and tune your boards for years.

Typical do-it-yourself edge tuning systems utilize a file/diamond stone with a bevel guide, which have problems because:

  1. The file or stone tends to "load up" or wear out quickly; EdgeTune´s grinding stones have an outstanding life.
  2. The flat file or stone doesn´t conform to the side edge curvature of modern shape skis/boards. They only make contact on the very ends of the file or stone, making the tool ineffective; EdgeTune™ utilizes a rotary cylinder that follows the exact contour of the shaped edge.
  3. Hand filing is laborious and slow; EdgeTune™ is easy and fast.
  4. Most hand file guides only sharpen either the base edge surface or the side edge. EdgeTune™ sharpens both.

Ceramic grinding has truly revolutionized the professional ski/board tuning industry worldwide. Ceramic technology provides the sharpest, smoothest ground edge while providing a near mirror finish.  EdgeTune™ is pleased to bring this professional technology to the consumer thanks to Norton Industries exciting new ALTOS grinding stones.  These superior stones create minimum heat generation (saving edge temper) and don’t require the cooling fluids professional systems use. The fine grain of the ceramics, combined with strong bonding agents, make them ideal for structural grinding with an excellent surface finish.

There are several rotary tool manufacturers on the market.  EdgeTune has chosen Dremel (Craftsman) because:
  1. Dual ball bearing construction providing the most precise and concentric grinding stone alignment. This design feature allows the finest edge surface and longest grinding stone life.
  2. Excellent speed and smooth operation.
  3. Outstanding quality and service reputation.
  4. Replaceable motor brushes for longer life.
  5. Extensive accessory options.

FAQs

1.  How accurate is EdgeTune?

Very accurate, assuming you start with a flat base and follow the instructions. The ceramic grinding stone surface must be fully dressed for squareness and concentricity for the sharpest edge. The bevel angle glide strips have a thickness tolerance of only ±3%, and the overall bevel angle tolerance is ± 1/20°.  Even ski shop techs could not detect such a slight variation.

2.  Will the grinding stone damage or remove too much edge material?

No. The EdgeTune bracket uses spring-loaded guides that guard against uneven or excessive edge grinds.  All that is required are smooth, gentle strokes of the tool along the edge.  Simply let the tool do the work. The ceramic stone is a very fine 220 grit and removes only a few thousandths of an inch per pass, significantly less material removal than a sharp hand file. The ceramic stone also has extremely low heat generation, preventing any edge steel material tempering.

3.  How long do the ceramic stones last?

It depends on the edge condition. A heavily rusted edge will require more passes and subsequent dressings. The ceramic stone was chosen not just for its precise grind but also for its durability.

Tip 1: As the stone wears on side edge grinds, loosen the collet and shift stone height to a “fresh” surface. This will minimize frequency of dressing.

Typical stone usage is 2 edge grinds per ski/board before re-dressing.  Shifting the stone height once before re-dressing doubles stone life. The ceramic stones will last for approx. 10 dressings = 20 snowboards / 10 pairs of skis per stone (assuming 1 stone height shift). EdgeTune comes standard with 3 stones.

Tip 2: As the stone diameter wears down, keep these for side edge grinds only as a very small diameter will not be sufficient to engage the full width of the base edge. Use a full diameter stone for the base edge grinds only. Side edge grinding will be more common than base edge grinding because a quick side edge grind “touch up” will re-sharpen the edge, while repeated base edge grinds should be minimized as they will affect the base flatness.
